Product Description

Hardback, 274 pgs.  A survey of costume of all periods and peoples from antiquity to modern times including national costume in Europe and Non-European countries.  A particular feature of this history is the way in which every type of costume and costume accessory (shoes, hats, gloves) is shown being worn by groups of figures.  Not only are the rich ladies and gentlemen of any given period illustrated, but also the merchants, the clerics, the soldiery, the seamen, the peasants and the poor of the period.  There are 200 pages of plates including 120 in colour.  On each page there are 3 or 4 groups of between 8 and 10 figures as described above.  This method of illustration has enabled an enormous amount of material to be included with a reasonable compass.  There are also 60 pages of notes and descriptions of the plates.
